VIDEO NAS

Video NAS (VNAS)

High-density write-optimized storage for IP camera systems. Surveillance-certified drives (WD Purple Pro, Seagate SkyHawk AI), 25/100GbE networking, designed for 24x7 sequential writes.

Configure your VNAS

Right-sized storage from
4 bays to 100

High-density storage backend for IP camera systems - cameras write directly to it, NVR or VMS reads from it - choose the model that matches your scale. Every system is custom-configured: pick the drives, networking, RAID, and OS that fit your workload.

Common questions

What is a Video NAS and how is it different from an NVR?

An NVR is an all-in-one box with cameras, software, and storage bundled. A Video NAS (VNAS) is pure write-optimized storage - your cameras or external NVR/VMS write video files directly to it. VNAS scales much higher (100s of cameras vs. dozens) and lets you choose any VMS (Frigate, ZoneMinder, Milestone, Genetec, BluVMS, etc.) without vendor lock-in.

What drives do you use and why?

WD Purple Pro and Seagate SkyHawk AI surveillance-certified drives. They are CMR (not SMR), rated for 24x7 sequential write workloads, and tuned for the write pattern that 4K H.265 video produces. Standard desktop drives wear out fast in surveillance use; "regular" NAS drives like WD Red are tuned for read-heavy workloads.

How many 4K cameras can a VNAS hold?

Rough sizing: a VNAS24 (24 bays, ~480TB raw, 25GbE) handles 30-100 4K H.265 cameras with 30-90 day retention depending on bitrate. A VNAS72 (72 bays, ~1.4PB, 100GbE) handles 100-500 cameras. We size for your specific bitrate, frame rate, and retention requirement.

Can I run Frigate or ZoneMinder on it directly?

Yes. Optional VNAS configurations ship with Frigate (object-detection AI VMS) or ZoneMinder (open-source classic NVR) pre-installed, so the same box does storage + VMS for smaller deployments. For larger deployments, run VMS on separate hardware and use VNAS as pure storage.

Status of VNAS line?

VNAS planning is documented in docs/VNAS-VIDEO-LINEUP.md - architecture decided 2026-04-30. SKUs (VNAS8, VNAS24, VNAS72) ship as branded variants of NAS8/24/72 with surveillance-certified drives and 25GbE default networking. GA targeting Q3 2026.
