Unlike traditional hardware calculators that start from server specifications, the eRacks tool starts from the bill a team already pays. Users pick their situation, seats on ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini plans, or rented cloud GPU hours by class, and the calculator compares that recurring spend against the one-time price of an eRacks GPU server at live, configured prices taken from the company's own online configurator.

The math is deliberately conservative and transparent. An advanced panel adds electricity and cooling overhead for a fully loaded number. Flagship 96GB-class systems are benchmarked against H100-class rental rates, and for value-class systems the tool says plainly when no true rental equivalent exists. The calculator makes no claims about what infrastructure the major AI providers operate; it compares what a team pays them monthly against the cost of serving capable open models, such as Llama, Qwen, and DeepSeek families, through open-source tools like Ollama and vLLM on hardware the team owns.

The example that motivated the tool: a 10-seat ChatGPT Team plan runs about $1,000 every month, $12,000 a year, indefinitely. A 2-GPU eRacks AILSA that serves capable open models to a small team is $7,695 one time, a break-even of roughly eight months, after which the hardware keeps working for years.

"Every month the subscriptions renew and the invoices land, and at the end of the year you own nothing," said Joseph Wolff, founder and CTO of eRacks Systems.
